I. The Causes of the Humor Art

Despite Dickens’ novels has colorful world and a variety of creative techniques, the humor art is one of the most prominent feature in Dickens’ novels indeed. If leaving his humor art regardless, readers can not grasp the essence of Dickens’ novels.

A .The Literary Background of the Victoria Flourishing Age
As the delicate charming rose won’t grow in barren desert, it is the same with the humor characteristics in Dickens’ novel, which cannot break away from particular cultural background and literary tradition.
Obviously, different countries or different national cultural historical background, make these state or national humor show obvious difference. People want to grasp the humor of nation or ethnic style, it is necessary to understand all of the country or national lives. In a sense, a country or nation’s humorous style is a microcosm of its entire lifestyle. As an individual, in this field impact is quite obviously, Dickens has a unique condition certainly.
Generally speaking, the British nation has always been known as circumspection, propriety, polite, seriously, rigid, non-smiler, as if it’s inherent nature of the British. However, in real life, people cannot live without laughter. Humorousness always gives people spiritual pleasure, and is a smart expression. This has epicene of mankind; the English nation is no exception. In addition, serious and rigid in life, the spirit of depression in reality, must lead people to find other outlets, and undoubtedly, literature art is a very good choice for relieve pressure. In this way, they also have more sensitive and more love to the humor of literature.
While, in the history of the English literature it also has a long tradition of humorous art. Traced history, the humorous art of British literature originated in early Britain literature stage. Jeffrey Chaucer is first modern writers in Britain, is also one of the English literature histories masters. His masterpiece The Canterbury Tales (in the late 14th century), is a full of life’s comedy. As literary historians point out: Chaucer’s humor is the most important feature, and determines the tone of the work in The Canterbury Tales. Most of his humor is shown in the description of the pilgrims’ characteristic in the introduction, also in many stories, which are bright and of humorous stories.
In Shakespeare’s dramas, 14 scripts are listed as comedies. Thereafter, a series of creations of the writers such as Jonson, Congreve, Oliver Goldsmith, Sheridan, Fielding, and Stern and so on, keep the humorous style. Therefore humorous masterpieces can be found everywhere in the literary history. It is the profound nation literature traditions that bred Dickens’ humor art.
Research of Dickens’ early life shows that Dickens reads plenty of books in the attic when he is a child, including Smollett’s The Adventures of Roderick Random, Fielding’s Tom Jones, Goldsmith’s The Vicar of Wakefield, Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe , Cervantes’s Don Quixote, Lesage’s Gil Blas, and the Arabian Nights, and so on. Obviously, most of these literary works are characterized by humor, with many comical factors. There is no doubt that these literary attainments have a silent transforming influence on Dickens, providing a good reference for Dickens to form unique humor style in his novels. Therefore, in the process of Dickens forming humor style in his novels, the humor art traditions of the whole English literature are the endless resource of the inspirations.

B. Family Environment of the Author
The formation of humor styles of Dickens has another motivation, which is the influence of family environment on him. In the lifetime of Dickens, his mother can be considered as his initial enlightenment teacher. He follows his mother to study, write and read. His mother also teaches him some basic Latin. Actually, Dickens inherits many excellent endowments from his mother. In the words of his father’s friend and the wife of Dr David saying, most of talent comes from his mother, and he learns the ability of appreciation for the funny thing and joy, anger, sorrow and happiness. He is a drama genius. The humorous proverb and the incomparable imitation of Mrs. Dickens make Mrs. David belly laugh. Of course, the influence of his father is not little. His father, John Dickens is originally a clerk in the department of the navy, but he is put into prison for bankruptcy and then loses the job. However, he depends on his efforts and learns shorthand. Then he becomes a news journalist of another profession. John has the quality of art and likes to tell stories. He always interprets some interesting fragment into amusing story or joke. At the same time, he is an amateur opera performer who loves acting. He often organized children and then performs some drama fragments. And in this process, he finds his oldest son’s art talent early. So he always brings Dickens on the table, letting him recite poems or play speaking for the guests. It is the special family optimistic character and humor talent that has a silence transforming influence on young Dickens.
